How big are bed bugs?Adult bedbugs are 4 cm long they are oval in shape, a fully gorged bed bug is dark brown in colour and is about the same shape and size as a small ladybird. When they haven't had a blood feed they are very flat and their bodies are a lighter colour. Bed bugs breed very rapidly an untreated infestation will grow very quickly. Bed bugs lay around five eggs a day; they hatch within days newly hatched bed bugs reach maturity in 30 days. In that first 30 days they feed regularly before they reach adult size. They shed their skins 5 times in during that first 30days. Once mature they will begin laying eggs of their own. A mature bed bug can produce more than 1,000 eggs a year. Bed bugs mate by the male pierces the female with his hypodermic genitalia and then ejaculates into the females body. The sperm travel via the female's blood to the ovaries where fertilisation takes place.
