BED BUG PROBLEMSGone are the days of calling out the expensive exterminator with his potentially harmful, toxic and un-environmentally friendly chemical sprays, which new research has shown the bed bugs are now becoming immune to.
BED BUGS ARE BACKDid you know that bed bugs used to feed on bats blood but followed our ancestors out of caves thousands of years ago?
SIZEAdult bedbugs are reddish-brown, flattened, oval, and wingless. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking that they are not visible to the naked eye. Adults grow to 45 mm (1/8th 3/16th of an inch) or about roughly half the size of your pinky finger nail. When first laid, the eggs are sticky, causing them to adhere to substrates. Newly hatched nymphs are no bigger than a pinhead. As they grow, they moult (shed their skin) five times before reaching maturity. A blood meal is needed between each successive moult. Under favourable conditions the bugs can complete development in as little as a month, producing three or more generations per year.
FEEDING HABITSBed bugs are generally active just before dawn, with a peak feeding period of about an hour before sunrise. They have been known to attempt to feed at other times of the day. Bed bugs can live for 18 months without feeding. They typically seek blood every 5 to 8 days, and can be detected by blood spots on the corner of your mattress and empty eggs cases, which can commonly be mistaken for dust or dirt.
BITESBed bug bites are commonly found on the face, neck, arms, or hands, sometimes on other exposed areas of the body. As bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide these bite sites can be towards the top of the body when the host is lying down asleep.
