BED BUGS ARE BACK

Did you know that bed bugs used to feed on bats blood but followed our ancestors out of caves thousands of years ago?

A bed bug is a small insect which only comes out at night and survives by feeding on the blood of humans. The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is best adapted to human environments. They are commonly found in warmer climates but have made their way to colder countries thanks to international travel and central heating.

SIZE

Adult bedbugs are reddish-brown, flattened, oval, and wingless. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking that they are not visible to the naked eye. Adults grow to 4–5 mm (1/8th – 3/16th of an inch) or about roughly half the size of your pinky finger nail. When first laid, the eggs are sticky, causing them to adhere to substrates. Newly hatched nymphs are no bigger than a pinhead. As they grow, they moult (shed their skin) five times before reaching maturity. A blood meal is needed between each successive moult. Under favourable conditions the bugs can complete development in as little as a month, producing three or more generations per year.

FEEDING HABITS

Bed bugs are generally active just before dawn, with a peak feeding period of about an hour before sunrise. They have been known to attempt to feed at other times of the day. Bed bugs can live for 18 months without feeding. They typically seek blood every 5 to 8 days, and can be detected by blood spots on the corner of your mattress and empty eggs cases, which can commonly be mistaken for dust or dirt.

Did you know, you don’t have to have a dirty house to get bed bugs, all they are looking for is your blood? Bed bugs are attracted by the carbon dioxide and body heat given off by your body, not by dirt, and they feed on your blood, not waste.

BITES

Bed bug bites are commonly found on the face, neck, arms, or hands, sometimes on other exposed areas of the body. As bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide these bite sites can be towards the top of the body when the host is lying down asleep.
The bites usually presents themselves as a raised welt which usually occurs as the result of an allergic reaction. This reaction is due to the anaesthetic saliva of the bed bug which it injects into the host to prevent the blood from clotting as it takes a feed. This is often followed by severe itching and inflammation of the area a few hours later.
Some people do not always react to the bite of a bed bug; this is usually because they have been bitten before and are de-sensitised to the bite. Other people can have an extreme reaction to a bite including severe hypersensitivity and asthmatic symptoms.
Multiple bites are often aligned to your veins.
